American Cancer Society

It’s time to highlight some local charities who are making real progress in our world. When it comes to one of the biggest battles in life, we can all agree cancer is one of the toughest ones. That’s why there is the American Cancer Society.

The Kansas chapter has been deep in the battle and doing what they can to raise awareness, provide services for cancer treatment management and recovery along with emotional support. And best of all, the help is free.

Why is this all important?

Well, besides the fact that cancer sucks, people may not understand the true scope of the effects.

An estimated 16,640 new cases and 5,660 deaths from cancer will take place in 2024 with lung cancer the leading cause of cancer death.

What’s even worse is there are 262,000 uninsured Kansans and therefore are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer at a late stage, when the disease is harder to treat, more costly and more difficult to survive.

How The American Cancer Society Helps

The American Cancer Society helps in three ways, through research, patient support and advocacy.

The group has invested more than $5 billion in cancer research since 1946, contributing to 4.1 million fewer cancer deaths.

ACS has connected 1,160 Kansans, 3,055 times, to trusted answers and support through a 24/7 cancer helpline in 2023.

By activating grassroots volunteers nationwide, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network fights cancer by elevating the patient voice to advance policy change.
