The Kindness Canteen: A food truck from the Down Syndrome Society of Wichita

Kindness Canteen - Down Syndrome Society of Wichita

A couple of years a question was asked to the Down Syndrome Society of Wichita. “What’s your dream?” And one of the answers was to have a food truck. And thanks to a kind donor who helped with the start-up costs, The Kindness Canteen was born.

The project has been in the works for two years and finally the city’s newest food truck is about ready to start.

The Kindness Canteen is a mobile food truck concept created to be run by individuals with Down syndrome. They handle everything from preparing the food, serving, customer service, everything.

If you stopped by the Riverfest Parade, The Kindness Canteen made their first appearance.

Recently, the team had another one day pop-up event outside the Down Syndrome Society of Wichita office to give them another test run and training.

I stopped by, and they were serving breakfast, including eggs, muffins, and sausages.

There was someone at each area of The Kindness Canteen. Someone was there to greet you, another individual was there to read you the menu items, and another to hand you the food. And something you don’t see much from food trucks because of limited staffing and time, there was another person walking around to follow up and check to see how you liked the food.

It was a total team effort at The Kindness Canteen, who not only served food but love, peace, and kindness.

The Kindness Canteen hopes to be fully ready by July 22 when they’ll have their first major event. Be sure to follow the Down Syndrome Society of Wichita on Facebook to see where they will be at next.
