2024 Lao New Year

Lao New Year - Lao Buddhist Associates of Kansas

One of the biggest cultural celebrations takes place every Memorial Day weekend at Lao Buddhist Associates of Wichita at 2550 S. Greenwich. It’s the Lao New Year Festival.

The three-day festival is one of the most popular events, attended by thousands of people.

A $5 entry gets you access to the vendor booths featuring, food, clothing, gifts, live music, dancing, the Miss Lao Pageant contest and more.

Regarding the food, you’ll find it all. Every piece of food on a skewer you can imagine, octopus, ballut eggs, sugarcane drinks, squid, spanning across many cultures, including Lao and Thai. AND word of advice, if they ask you for the spice level, be care if you say MILD. That translates to burn your butthole hot.

Here’s a glimpse of some of the food you’ll find:

It truly is a beautiful event that runs until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and then until 8 p.m. on Sunday over the Memorial Day weekend.

It’s busy, parking is tight, but it’s well worth the visit.

Lastly, bring your dancing shoes. If you hang out underneath the tent, there’s tons of live music and it’s a total party.

And in case you missed it, here’s a video look at what took place:
