El Papa Gallo Restaurant Review

Over at our Facebook page, I asked for suggestions on little known restaurants that are rarely discussed. One of those suggestions was El Papa Gallo, a small little restaurant near the corner of Harry and Washington.

At El Papa Gallo, they serve your traditional Mexican fare like nachos, flautas, tortas, and tacos.

If you ever go there on Tuesdays, they offer $1 chicken tacos but the real winner at El Papa Gallo is the roasted chicken. You can get a whole chicken for $16.95, a half chicken for $10.50 or a quarter for $7.50.

I opted for the quarter chicken and regretted the decision immediately after I started diving into my meal. The flavor, the juiciness, the crispiness of the skin covering the tender chicken was all there. It was honestly some of the best grilled chicken I’ve had.

Now roasted chicken which is served at many other Mexican restaurants and not a dish I’ve ordered often. Now that the bar has been set,  I’ll be ordering this at other restaurants to see how their offerings compare.

As for the other food, I’ll admit that I wasn’t too impressed by it.

I found the tacos to be a little dry and lacking the same quality as the roasted chicken while the free chips and salsa were fairly basic. The salsa just didn’t have much to it.

Even with that said, the chicken was well worth the drive and enough to be worth a second trip for me. While glancing at their menu, they also serve Mexican Pizza which is very intriguing and likely to be an order for my second go around.

Happy Dining,
Eddy
