I have roughly twenty-something restaurants to visit until I’m caught up with every single locally owned place in town. This adventure around Wichita has allowed me to really branch out and eat at places you rarely read about. The latest visit brought me to Cevicheria y botanas la isla. They are a Mexican seafood restaurant in a small strip center south of 21st and Broadway. Their menu consists mostly of seafood and ceviche.

It’s seafood so it’s not going to be cheap. Most dishes on the menu were around the $15-25 price range. There were six other diners inside the restaurant during my visit and they all had the exact same dish. I asked the server what it was as it seemed to be the most popular item. I was told it was the mixto.
So what did I order? The mixto which was cooked shrimp, octopus, ceviche, scallops, fish strips, served on a layer of fresh cucumbers. It was served with a side of crackers and hard shell tortillas. There was also a bunch of condiments available like mayo, hot sauce, soy sauce, ketchup and more. Customers were using the hard shell tortillas, spreading it with condiments and placing the ceviche on top to make their own tostadas.
The mixto plate was generous portion big enough to feed two or three people. But everyone there was ordering the mixto for themselves. I wanted to fit in with the rest of the diners so I went full pig out mode. This dish was a heaping mountain of food. It was extremely fresh and delightful with a vibrant citrus zest to it. After a while the acidity really picked up but the avocado and hard shell tortillas helped tone it down.
It was one of those dining experiences that left you sad when you finished. Not because it was a bad meal but because there wasn’t anymore food left. It was so good.
The service and cleanliness of the place was also in top shape on my visit. It’s a little hole in the wall but they did a great job of cleaning everything up. I’m so glad I finally made it here. I will be back!
