Asian Groceries has a kitchen open serving Indian food

Have you ever heard of Asian Groceries?

They are a family-owned grocery store in at 6249 E. 21st St. that specializes in selling fresh produce & halal meat, middle Eastern and south-east Asian spices, food products and cosmetics. About a month ago, they opened a kitchen inside selling Indian dishes.

The kitchen is located at the east end of the store. Just enter Asian Groceries, turn left and you can’t miss it. When I dropped by, they had samosas available along with a menu featuring curry dishes with assorted meats.

I went with the goat/lamb curry. Since they were running low on rice, they also gave me their fried rice.

The last thing the gentleman said to me at the store was, “If you like spicy food, you’re going to love this.”

I took the food home because they didn’t have any seating inside Asian Groceries. They did mention that chairs and tables were coming in about a month.

When I arrived home, I poured some rice and the goat/lamb curry into a bowl, and started chowing down. The gentleman was not lying. The curry had loads of heat; I’m talking gut busting heat that hit you hours later. My dish was loaded with flavor, though, despite its lingering heat that refused to leave. The meat was incredibly tender and I couldn’t stop eating, despite knowing the pain my gut would go through hours later.

It was certainly worth it.

The 21st and Woodlawn area is quite the hot bed for Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine, so this is another one to add to the list to try.
