First Look at Las Abuelas located in the former Beautiful Day Cafe space

Las Abuelas

A new restaurant has taken over the Beautiful Day Cafe space at 2516 E. Central. Las Abuelas, who started out doing pop-ups, has graduated to a brick-and-mortar space.

According to the Facebook page, the restaurant provides homestyle cuisine. Looking at their menu, it is inspired by a mix of Mexican, Salvadoran, and Middle Eastern flair.

During my visit, I asked for suggestions on what they would recommend most. The first one they gave me was burritos. For whatever reason, I wasn’t feeling burritos that day and asked for something that isn’t commonly found around town. The next suggestion was shakshuka.

Las Abuelas take on this dish included 4 sunny-side eggs cooked over a savory Shakshuka with a side of hummus with pita.

To start things off, I had the pita, cucumbers, and hummus. The pita was very warm and soft; I really enjoyed the hummus which had a lemony and nutty flavor to it.

The shakshuka was delicious. I have to be honest, it’s a hard dish to describe as it’s quite complex in flavors. It’s sweet, yet smoky, but at the same time, none of the flavors are really overpowering. The egg was a nice touch. Keep in mind, it’s a very light dish with the egg being all the protein. If you’re really hungry, I’d probably get something else like the burrito.

I ended my meal with a lemon tart. It’s worth noting, all the desserts are made in-house. The crust was outstanding, crispy, and crumbly, just the way I like it.

Lastly, the service at Las Abuelas was excellent. The staff was extremely kind and welcoming.
