I was craving a Fattoush salad, and was running errands on the east side of town. While driving down Douglas, I came across a restaurant I haven’t been to in some time, College Hill Deli & Catering. It has probably been a few years so I put it on my list of things to do that afternoon and stopped in for lunch.

I started off with a Fattoush salad. It came with mixed lettuce, romaine, iceberg, mixed spring mix lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, black olives, and sweet red onions. It was tossed in their homemade Fattoush dressing and topped with feta cheese and pita crisp.
The salad was a beautiful, fresh, simple and zesty blend of flavors that livened up my taste buds. It was exactly the salad I was looking for. My appetite was satisfied by a tasty dish of greens.
… But I couldn’t stop by, eat a salad and leave it at that!
I asked my server what she’d recommend from the entrée side of the menu. She recommended me the chicken biryani which was an Indian dish made with sautéed morsels of chicken in a cream blend of vegetables, garlic, ginger, turmeric and cumin. The dish was served over rice.
It was much milder in flavor and aroma than many chicken biryani dishes I’ve had around town which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. It still had a nice fragrant aroma to it. The dish was rich and complex in flavors. There was a lot going on and it definitely packed a lot of punch. Each bite had me coming back for more. My only complaint was the rice. When eating chicken biryani, I love scooping everything up with lots of rice.
Have you ever heard the analogy “on a bed of rice”? That’s exactly what the chicken biryani sat on. Unfortunately, my dish laid on a “twin-sized” bed of rice. There wasn’t much rice to go around. Aside from that, it would have been a picture-perfect dish. Overall though it was a minor complaint that didn’t take much away from the total quality of the meal.
My server did a fantastic job that afternoon. Everybody was nice, engaging and made my brief lunch stop a worthwhile one.
