WICHITA, Kan. (Wichita By E.B.) – Family Video announced via their corporate Facebook page it is closing all of its stores nationwide, including three in Wichita, and one in Derby and Haysville.
All locations have begun placing everything on clearance with some selling off store fixtures, gumball machines, etc. Stores will remain open until inventory is sold out.
The closing of Family Video could very well mark the end of the brick & mortar movie rental industry. Long gone especially in Wichita were the days of walking up and down the aisles of places like Movie Gallery, Hollywood Video and Blockbuster, grabbing movie boxes, reading the backs to see what they were about, renting them, returning them a month later and returning to the store to find out you had plenty of late fees.
Their CEO, Keith Hoogland, noted the impact COVID-19 had not just on foot traffic, but new movie releases pushed them to the end of an era.
