Get To Know… Big B’s Beef

Big B’s Beef

July 2020

Brian and Liz Bathgate

We were born and raised in Joliet, Illinois. We met in Freshman year math class, when we were 14 & 15, and have been married since 1997.

Our family has now grown to five children: Kayla (26, husband, Cameron,) Kelsie (22, fiancée Tony), Dylan (15), David (12), & Drew (10) and four grandchildren: Zach, Zoey, Breckyn & Bella.

In 2008, we moved to Wichita and had our 2 youngest sons here. Upon our move, we realized that we missed our foods the most. We chose traditional Chicago Italian Beef, because it’s something important to both of us having grown up on it as children. Our favorite places were the small, hole-in-the wall spots, run by local families.

We grew up on Chicago Beef & Dog stands, and have always wanted to bring the taste of Chicago to Wichita.

Prior to our move, Brian worked as a Diesel Mechanic, Shop Manager, and Liz worked in social services/legal services field. Brian has worked in many restaurants, including a 5 star casino kitchen near Chicago, and has always loved cooking.

We are a large family that has a small food truck/mobile beef & dog stand. We serve real, authentic Chicago Style sandwiches and foods such as Italian Beef, The Combo (Italian Beef & Sausage), Italian Sausage, Vienna Beef Chicago Dogs, Maxwell Street Polish, Gyros, Pizza Puffs, Hand-cut Fries, Garlic Fries, Cheese Fries, Loaded Beef Fries, Fried Mushrooms and Fried Cauliflower.

Brian loves to cook.

We love feeding people and making people happy. We believe that for most people, having great food brings back memories of happy times, or a time spent enjoying Chicago Style foods. We have 5 children, some of whom are adults with kids of their own.  We have a large family, and you will always see some of the family working on the truck.  Both of us come from large families, and believe that everyone can contribute and help.

We’ve made many friends, and can’t thank our amazing customers enough.  We have the very best customers.

  1. Me and the boys (and occasionally other family members) were semi-regular customers when they were on south Seneca in the building that later housed Sweet Willies BBQ, then followed them to Delano when they moved up there. None of us have managed to chase the truck down yet, but man I really miss the Horseshoe and the pizza puffs…

  2. Without a doubt, there’s no better Chicago style beef sandwich than the one that Big B’s Beef serves. As did Liz and Brian, I too grew up near Chicago though I grew up in Indiana, 30 minutes from downtown Chicago and close to the Indiana/Illinois state line. My family used to get beef sandwiches at a place in Chicago called Dukes, just over the state line in Illinois. We also had a hot dog place in Hammond that served hot dogs and Polish sausage sandwiches. Thus Big B’s Beef is a taste of home for me. Besides having great food. Liz and the rest of the family are really nice people and it’s always great to do business with nice people. I missed Big B’s when they returned to Illinois for a time and I’m really glad they’re back. If you haven’t tried their food yet, please do. You will not be disappointed.
