One of my favorite bakeries around town is Bagatelle Bakery. It’s a place my family has gone to purchase many cakes and desserts for birthday and holiday celebrations. It’s also a bakery that many restaurants use to make their desserts and breads. They’re Strawberry Chantilly Cake is a top three cake in Wichita for me. But what some people don’t know is the family owned European-style cafe also serves lunch throughout most of the week. They have different specials that are posted on their Facebook page.

On the day I stopped in, beef stroganoff was on special. I’m a huge fan of the dish, but it was sold out when I arrived. I was given a pro-tip that it’s typically best to arrive earlier in the lunch hour for their rotating specials.
I went with my back-up which was a reuben and asked for a side of tabbouleh. With no beef stroganoff in my near future, I decided to pick up some dessert to drown my sorrows in. A strawberry log sounded like a good cure.
One of the best parts about Bagatelle is how affordable everything is. Most meals range around $7-8.
The strawberry log was pure bliss. (Yes, I started off with dessert…. sue me). It was creamy, moist and just the right balance of icing to strawberry flavor.
As for the tabbouleh, it was quite refreshing. No one ingredient overpowered the other, it was a finely diced mixture that made for a zesty side.
The reueben was a hefty meal. There was plenty of everything to go around. It tasted like a classic reuben should. My only complaint was the bread was toasted a little too much, so it didn’t compress or form to the sandwich easily. The toasted bread made it a little stuff to where the interior of the sandwich would fall out easily. It was a minor complaint that didn’t take away from the meal but worth noting as it can make for a messy eat.
Bagatelle Bakery was packed when I arrived, but they did a great job of getting customers taken care of. My biggest regret of the day was not walking out with an entire Strawberry Chantilly Cake.
