Food from a gas station is something we all have done at some point in our lives. Whether that’s a 2 a.m. hot dog, a donut and coffee on the work to work, a quick egg roll or roller item before a road trip, we’ve all done it. While I was getting some gas at Casey’s General Store, I decided, “Why not get some breakfast?”
I’m a fan of Casey’s pizza, so I was interested to see if they also put out some delicious breakfast.
While many items can be ordered, they have a handful of food that is already set out to grab and go. They had breakfast pizza, biscuits and gravy, breakfast sandwiches, burritos and more.
I went with the biscuits and gravy, a fully loaded breakfast burrito and a breakfast pizza wish sausage.
When it comes to breakfast food sitting out under a warmer, it hasn’t ended in great results for me. This was no different of an experience for me. While I appreciated the amount of sausage in the gravy, the biscuits had a very spongy texture to it. It was chewier than a biscuit should be.
The rest of my breakfast suffered from sitting out too long. The pizza was rock hard…..OK, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but the crust lacked any softness to it. The sausage was tough and might as well been cold. My burrito wasn’t that soft, either. It tasted and felt like it had been sitting out for a while. When it came to toppings, the burrito had plenty going on. There was lots of bacon, sausage and egg inside, but they were all tough and dry. The hot sauce packets made both the pizza and burrito a little better, but not enough for me to entertain the thought of trying it again.
Perhaps if I ordered everything fresh and made to order, the results would have been better. But when it comes to the grab and go side of things, I don’t have any interest in trying that again.
The regular pizza though…. excellent!

As I work for Casey’s as a food service leader, you can check the bottom of all items in case and pizza to see how long they have been in the warmer. We are only allowed 1 hour. Doesn’t mean that is what everyone is doing properly, but for future check the times. Should have time in and time out.
