A day of brunch, bingo, pickleball and ice skating at Chicken N Pickle

It’s the season of spending time with family and friends. I thought it would be fun to get out of the house and check out one of the unique entertainment options in town. The Ice Pond is back open at Chicken N Pickle. So I figured why not make a big day out of it with everybody?

We started the day with their Sunday brunch buffet, which happened to also have bingo going on. The brunch was $20.99 a person ($9.99 per child) with free bingo and prizes. The buffet line had your basic breakfast staples along with other items like their chicken and waffles and tacos.

During the brunch buffet, they had bingo going on for free where you could win prizes. If you’ve been following Wichita By E.B., you’ll know that we are big fans of bingo. And guess what? I actually won! A Wichita Brewing Co growler and some shirts now have a new home.

Up next, we reserved two indoor courts for pickleball and spent the next hours burning off all the calories we ate. For many people, it was their first time playing pickleball, but they loved every second of it. If you’ve never played, it’s a blast and an easy game that people of all ages can easily pick up and play.

Now for what everybody probably came to read about: the ice skating at The Ice Pond. It’s the only outdoor ice skating rink in the city that I know of. To skate it is $11 and an additional $4 for skate rental. Children 3 and under skate for free. The rink is open Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to close and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to close, weather permitting, of course.

You can rent the skates and pay for the ice skating at the outdoor bar area seen below.

Once you put your skates on, say a prayer.

For our big group of family and friends, it was split on who was new to skating and who wasn’t. For me, it was my second time ever ice skating. True story: The last time I went ice skating was in high school. It was a first date and my only memories of it were constantly falling down. Needless to say, there was never a second date.

Fast-forward to now, and my performance wasn’t much better. While all the kids seemed to pick up on it quickly, there was me barely getting by. The kids compared me to an old man with bad legs trying to walk as I skated. I’m not even sure skated is the proper word to use for what I was doing; perhaps trying not to fall in the most awkward of ways is more suitable to use. I’m pretty sure my 3-year-old niece was better than me and made sure I knew.

Regardless of my poor performance, my family, and friends loved it out there on the ice. They were all smiles and laughs the whole time. Although some of us struggled, everybody certainly made the most of it and enjoyed the time on the Ice Pond. Even with the cold Wichita wind, everyone was bundled up, which made the weather irrelevant. What made it more fun was that the whole outdoor ice skating experience was unique. It makes for a great time when you’re doing something together that can’t be done elsewhere.

All in all, it made for a great fun afternoon of family fun. An incredible way to end our Sunday funday.
