One of my favorite experiential dishes is hot pot. There’s nothing like having a pot of broth, tossing in all the fixings and having your food prepared in front of you. From a visual perspective, it’s cool. From a taste perspective, it’s even better. One of the few places around town offering hot pot is Crafted at 9730 E. 21st St.
For the uninitiated, hot pot is a cooking method prepared with a simmering pot of soup stock at the dining table. The meat and/or seafood in the bowl cook right in front of you. Many times, hot pot is served in big bowls and served family style.
At Crafted, they do things a little different. They have individual sized hot pots for $17.99, but they could potentially feed two, depending on the size of your appetite. Hot Pot is available from 4pm until 8pm at this time, and diners are encouraged to call ahead.
When you get your hot pot, the process is simple. Toss everything in the broth and let it cook. There are three different broths: Tom Yum, Szechuan and Black Pepper. There’s also a Vegetarian option with a mushroom-based broth served with plant-based shrimp. In true Wichita By E.B. fashion, we tried them all. Each order comes with noodles, bok choy, enoki mushrooms, and nappa cabbage.
What’s nice about hot pot is it’s about as fresh as you can get. It’s literally cooked on the spot.
My whole family loved the whole experience. Even though they were “individual size”, we shared our pots and shared them all. Of the three broths, my favorite was Tom Yum as I’m such a sucker for hour and sour flavors.
If you have never tried hot pot, this is certainly an experience worth dining for. There aren’t many options around town for it and especially in northeast Wichita, it’s just Crafted.
