First Look at Athens Gyros Express

Athens Gyros Express

Do you miss or remember Marrakech Cafe that used to be on east 21st Street, or Athens Restaurant inside Towne East Square? The owner of both restaurants was last seen at the beginning of the year, when he closed Athens in the mall to look for a more affordable location. And with that, Athens Gyros Express has opened at 2800 E. Central Ave.

Athens Gyros Express is a fast casual sit-down restaurant that offers Greek dishes like gyros, as the name suggests. The menu also features Philly cheesesteak, shawarma, Greek salad, cheeseburgers, hot n’ spicy chicken sandwich, and more. There’s something on there for those looking for Greek dishes and a selection of different meals if you want to venture out and try their takes.

Hummus with pita started my day at Gyros Express. The pita came out soft and warm, which I really loved. I couldn’t get over how delicious the pita bread was. The hummus was pretty tasty as well.

Next up was the classic gyro. I decided to make it a meal with fries and a drink. My drink of choice was the pickled lemonade. If you love pickle flavor, this is a must.

As for the fries, I know it’s just fries, but wow, the fries were perfectly crispy and seasoned. I finished them before I got to my gyro. And the gyro? It was as good as I remember from Athens. Personal preference, I would have liked a little more Tzatziki sauce and my lazy bum could have asked for it. Otherwise, there was plenty of meat, lettuce, onion, tomato, and cucumber. It was certainly filling.

To end my meal, I went with the tiramisu. This was the lowlight of my meal. It must have been sitting in the fridge or freezer because it was really cold, and parts of it were crunchy as if it had recently thawed. It was so cold and hard in certain parts that it took away from the whole tiramisu experience.

Outside the dessert, my visit to Athens Gyros Express was an excellent one. I remember the platters being excellent at Athens and I’m betting they will be good at the new restaurant.

Here’s their menu:

Happy Dining,
