Move over roller grill, hello QuikTrip sushi

QuikTrip Sushi is now a thing!

QuikTrip Sushi

Most people have probably tried QuikTrip’s roller grill but did you know you can now add QuikTrip sushi to your gas station food cravings list?

The popular convenience store chain based out of Tulsa, OK, recently added sushi to their line of quick, grab & go meals.

To my knowledge, most locations in Wichita should now carry the QuikTrip sushi which can be found in the open air cooler where there’s sandwiches, yogurt, and microwavable burritos.

QuikTrip Sushi

When I dropped by, they only had classic California rolls available. I asked a cashier if they had any others, and he went in the back and found a Spicy Crab Roll in the freezer in the back. I purchased both and had to let the latter thaw in the kitchen for a while.

The two sushi rolls were $7.06 each which included tax.

Breaking down each sushi, the classic California roll consisted of wild Alaskan seafood and creamy avocado while the spicy crab roll was made with wild Alaskan seafood, carrots, and sriracha.

What’s nice about the QuikTrip sushi was that it came with small packets of ginger, soy sauce, and wasabi.

Adding to the convenience, the little crevace that held the sauce packs made for a great spot to pour the soy sauce into.

Each container also came with 8 pieces of Uramaki sushi which is rolled sushi with rice on the outside and nori on the inside. Fun fact: urakami is considered to be the most popular style of sushi in the United States. I prefer maki, sashimi or nigiri but will never pass up sushi in general even from a gas station.

The pieces of sushi were also pretty decent size.

So how was it?

For starters, I’m not a California roll fan in general, so my opinion is already biased. I think ordering California rolls is like asking for a well-done steak. Needless to say I wasn’t a fan of QuikTrip’s take on the California roll, but like I said, my expectations were already low.

As for the Spicy Crab Roll, it was ok. There was a hint of sriracha in each bite, but not to the point where the heat was unbearable. There was also plenty of crab in each bite. By gas station standards and what people might expect from getting sushi at one, it was better than I thought it’d be.

Would I consider going back for sushi on the go versus a place like Target or Dillons? Probably not. Plus the wasabi had an odd flavor to it; something wasn’t right that I couldn’t detect. But again, that didn’t deter me from finishing all 16 pieces.

Probably my favorite part of the QuikTrip sushi experience was the container it came in. It was designed perfectly to hold eight pieces of sushi without them moving around in the container, and the spot for the sauce was brilliant. Only thing missing was chopsticks because how many people besides me carry emergency chopsticks in their car for such occasions?

Happy Dining,
Eddy
