Uno Mas Fresh Mex: Burgers or Tacos?

A new Uno Mas Fresh Mex has opened at the Tyler Pointe strip center at 13th and Tyler in the former Kolace space.  Some people may be familiar with their brick & mortar Uno Mas restaurant at 1920 W 21st St, their Uno Mas taco truck, or their Uno Mas Burgers food truck.

Their new restaurant focuses at what they do best at all venues and combines it into one. The new location is a combination of both their tacos and burgers.

Tacos and burgers in one place? Sold.

For this review I was joined by Troy from the Wichita YouTube Channel Live Local. Over lunch time, we had the Mexican burger, a Sonoran hot dog, an al pastor taco and a Bam Bam shrimp taco.

To start, everything came out fresh…. and fast. At their drink counter, they had three sauce options available. Do not sleep on their Arbol sauce. It’s probably their hottest sauce but it doesn’t linger and stay long. It’s a quick bit of heat that punches you in the back of the throat and leaves quickly. Perhaps another name for the sauce should be “Quick Divorce”.

There was no question once we received our food, the portion sizes were huge and you wouldn’t leave hungry. Troy really enjoyed his Mexican burger which came with a double steak burger, grilled all beef hot dog, smashed avocado, pickled jalapeños, pepper jack cheese, ltop, mustard and mayo.

The Sonoran dog was no laughing matter. I originally tried to eat it with my hands at first but realized my hands were too small (insert all the jokes here). I had to grab a fork and a knife to make it manageable. The Sonoran Dog consisted of an all beef frank, smoked bacon, pinto beans, jack cheese, pico de gallo, jalapeños, mustard and mayo. I enjoyed everything besides the pinto beans……. I’m just not a fan of them. Other than that, I loved it and should have ended my meal there but I had two tacos in front of me.

Between the two I had, I very much enjoyed the Bam Bam Shrimp taco more. There were big flavorful piece of shrimp inside and the pickled cabbage and especially the sweet chili glaze really made it a homerun for me. Seeing the name, you might think Bang Bang Shrimp tacos but it wasn’t like that. It was slightly sweeter and not as spicy but worth it.

Let’s also discuss the elephant in the room, something I hear often in regard to Uno Mas (and other taco places of its kind)… the price point of their tacos. I think Wichita has really been conditioned to think that all tacos should be $1 or $2 given many of the local hot spots in town which are amazing. It’s different here where many of the tacos here are $3 and $4.

I don’t believe all tacos are the same. Many of the $1 and $2 tacos are your basic tortillas, meat, cilantro, and onions often cases where the rent is way cheaper. These types of tacos are a different style with something different added to them whether it’s pickled cabbage, queso fresco, sweet chili glaze, chipotle crema, whatever it may be. It’s like a different category of gourmet tacos.

Even with that you may not agree with me but personally see tacos as different categories:

  • Tex-Mex
  • Fast Food Cheap Meat Tacos
  • Standard Street Tacos
  • Gourmet Tacos

While I’m a huge fan of your standard street tacos and choose those more often than others, I think a category of gourmet tacos should be treated differently.

I’ll leave all that there and let it resonate with you.

Here’s their menu:

Happy Dining,
Eddy
