First Look at Eggroll Express

It’s no secret that south side restaurants rarely get as much love or attention compared to places located out in the northwest or northeast parts of town. But I’m here to share with you a restaurant that hopefully gets some eyes, ears and more importantly taste buds on it, Eggroll Express. The new Asian restaurant that primarily focuses on fast casual Chinese cuisine opened last week. The owners are no strangers to the local restaurant scene as they used to own Hunan Cafe that was replaced by Nam Viet and eventually Xing Xing on East Pawnee.

The menu covers many popular dishes from the old Hunan Cafe. They have an assortment of chicken dishes, lo mein, fried rice, chop suey, and more.

We stopped by over the weekend to order some lo mein, fried rice and beef egg foo young. The kids had the lo mein and fried rice dishes and literally had their meals over the course of two deals. The portion sizes were very generous and enough for 2-3 appetites.

While I didn’t try either of the dishes, I was loving every bite of the beef egg foo young. It came with three patties. Imagine an omelet made with eggs, bean sprouts, cabbage, mushrooms and other vegetables and stuffed with beef. Then you’re given some fried rice and gravy to mix it all together.

It was a hearty dish that kept me coming back for more. I was getting stuffed but couldn’t put my fork down. The gravy might have been the best part; it was sweet yet salty and savory; just the perfect compliment for the patties and rice. Mark my word, I’ll be going back this week for more.

It was an excellent meal and a great first visit to the new Eggroll Express. Quick service and fast casual Chinese restaurants are a dime a dozen in town. Fortunately, this one offered something to me that knocked my taste buds silly.

While I was waiting for my food, I overheard a customer telling who I believe to be the owner, “I saw Eddy post about this restaurant. We love trying new places and wanted to stop by even though we live in northeast Wichita.” The owners eyes lit up and said, “Oh he did, I hope he comes in and gives me a good review.” The customer and owner debated whether I had been in yet.

I sat in the corner of the restaurant with my hat and mask on pondering whether to introduce myself. I opted not to and waited for my carryout. Once I arrived home and took the first bite of the egg foo young, I was ready to grant the owners request for a good review.

Check them out.

Happy Dining,
Eddy
