My Pick for the Best Shave Ice in the Wichita Area

There are a ton of options to get shave ice/shave ice/sno cones or whatever terminology you want to use. I’ve tried a vast majority all of the Wichita area and my heart always goes back to one mobile vendor that sticks out as the best for me: Rockin Rico’s Sno Balls.

The picture above shows them at one of their previous locations in the last year but they’ve since posted up near the Derby movie theater at 1300 N. Nelson Dr.

Rockin Rico’s serves Sno Balls. So, you’re probably asking what that is.

A sno ball is a New Orleans confection made with finely shaved ice and flavored cane sugar syrup. Commonly confused with the snow cone, the ice of a snoball is fine and fluffy; while a snow cone’s ice is coarse, crunchy, and granular. Moreover, in a snow cone the flavored syrup sinks to the bottom of the cup; while in a sno ball the ice absorbs the syrup. The big difference in the sno ball is the ice. It’s noticeably fluffier than their counterpart and really holds the syrup better. It makes for an easier eat during the hotter months.

At Rockin’ Rico’s, they also have gourmet options that include soft serve ice cream along with other ingredients and toppings to take your sno ball experience to a whole new level. The gourmet options have become my personal preference.

Root Beer and Strawberry

The gourmet flavors had a sweet drizzle poured over the top that added a nice pop to it. Between the soft serve and the sno ball, it was a very smooth and delicious treat. The consistency of the sno ball held well throughout the evening. On my return visit to the Derby location, I went with the Strawberry Blast which was wild strawberry, vanilla creme, a scoop of ice cream and sweet drizzle. Seriously, life doesn’t get any better.

Here’s their menu:

Here are the prices for the sno balls:
Mini Rock (8oz.) – $2.00
Rockstar (12 oz.) – $2.50
Superstar (16 oz.) – $3.00
Megastar (20 oz.) – $3.50
King of Rock (32 oz.) – $5.00
