Another one of the local restaurants that took quite a beating over the past year and a half is Fuji Japanese Grill & Sushi. The Japanese restaurant, which is located at 327 N. Hillside, has been in town for seven years and is close to Wesley Hospital along with College Hill. They are one of the few places in that area of town who offer quick service Japanese dishes like hibachi and sushi.

Since the pandemic and food shortages, they’ve had to slim down their menu and remove items like ramen, but they left their popular teriyaki, hibachi and yakisoba meals. Then of course, they kept sushi because there was still a segment of customers who’d always stop in and grab some on the go.

Over the past year and a half, we’ve dropped in twice. We’ve ordered their yakisoba and hibachi meals with such proteins as chicken, shrimp, and scallops. We’ve also had their sushi.

While sushi isn’t the star of the show, it’s a convenient, quick, affordable appetizer that I always start my meal with. Their rolls aren’t as unique as many of the dedicated sushi restaurants in Wichita, but that’s not what they’re going for. The salmon tuna roll is one of my go-to’s and very satisfying.

And more satisfying are their noodle and rice dishes. After all, they are the most popular items on the menu. The meals aren’t too greasy or oily. We have always enjoyed the grill hibachi flavor. If you had to make us choose what are favorite item is, we’d likely go with the noodles and any protein of your choice.

What I appreciate even more about Fuji is the couple who runs the restaurant. They’ve been hustling and busting their butts to make it work for seven years. It takes a special type of person to not give up in an industry that isn’t for the weak. And through all of this, they still do it with a smile on their face and are incredibly polite to every single person who walks through those doors.

Here’s their menu:

Happy Dining,
Eddy
