We were celebrating a birthday for an extended family member and decided to check out the south side location of The Angry Elephant. We’ve been plenty of times to their original location on south Hillside, along with their Tyler store. This was our first time visiting the newer location that opened earlier this year.

Since there was a big group of us, we decided to order some apps. My end of the table had BBQ Cheese Fries. This was an appetizer that definitely needed a fork if you wanted to get a piece of everything in a single bite. The feedback on the table was mixed. Although the concept of BBQ, fries and cheese sounded good, we think ordering the nachos would have been a better route to go.
Our table ordered all sorts of dishes from multi-meat meals, burgers, and tacos. Without getting into all the specifics, here’s a visual of some of the dishes we had.
I went with the pick three meat meal with 7 pepper brisket, ribs, and pork. Like the appetizer, my opinion was mixed. The pork was probably the favorite of the three, while the other meats just didn’t do it for me. There wasn’t much of a smokiness to it, and my meats were a bit dry. The sides were also OK, nothing to write home about, but also nothing worth getting upset about.
The rest of my family felt the same way about the sides. The focus seemed to be more on the meats, and the opinions from my family on that were also mixed. They felt compared to other BBQ restaurants, this would rank more in the middle.
Unfortunately, the biggest kicker for us was the service. This has been a cause of concern for me at my visits to their other location on Tyler. Sporadically, it’s been good; other times it hasn’t. It’s very hit and miss and our service on this particular visit was just not up to par.
And this wasn’t an issue of being understaffed or overworked because the restaurant wasn’t that busy. It was a matter of inattentiveness, and we think many moments of spacing out. Getting a single beer took forever, our server was literally just chatting it up with random people. Tabbing out alone was a long process, we thought our server disappeared. Sometimes when you go out to celebrate a birthday with your parents and extended family, you want to have a good time, and the service was a major buzz kill on the day.
I know people’s opinions of Angry Elephant vary all across the board. It just so happens our experiences also vary across the board. This time, it was a thumbs down.
Here’s their menu:

My husband and I tried this location because of the good things we heard about the Tyler location. We had 4 different people “take care of” us. The food was not very good, the “upcharge” for ribs was ridiculous, our appetizer came out after our food. Employees were running around drinking beer. It was not a pleasant experience.
