If you’ve ever been to Plaza Mexico at 808 W. 25th St., you’ll know there’s always at least one restaurant sitting inside the shopping center. Most recently, there have been a couple of short-lived restaurants in El Papa Pollo and El Puerto Seafood & Chicken Restaurant, both of which had small runs. Now it’s La Sirenita Restaurant.

I dropped by for lunch on my continual quest to visit 100% of restaurants in town, but this place seems to drop it down to 99.99% right as I’m complete.
The first thing that caught my eye on the menu was Mexican sushi. Unfortunately, I was told they were sold out by 1 p.m.
Then I glanced over and saw the carnitas platter. I was also told that it was sold out as well.
On my third time, I asked what they did have, and the lady pointed at the first thing on the first page of the menu: carne asada.
At $12.99, I said sure, paid for my meal, waited about 15 minutes and had my meal in hand to head home.
At first glance, it wasn’t the most visually appealing meal, but that’s never really mattered to me. Taste trumps all things. And for this meal, it was all just OK to me. The carne asada was tender in some parts and tough in others. The beans were bland and didn’t offer much. As for the rice, there wasn’t anything memorable there either. The entire meal just felt incredibly basic for me.
First impression at La Sirenita Restaurant wasn’t the best. Part of it was my fault for not finding a better third option than one of the most basic items on the menu. But then again, they didn’t really execute basic all that well. And for a corner of Wichita that has some bomb Mexican food, they have their work cut out for them.
Here’s the menu:
Happy Dining,
