A family evening of bowling at Shocker Sports Grill & Lanes

Shocker Sports Grill & Lanes

In need of some long-overdue family time with the kids and cousins, we enjoyed an evening of bowling at Shockers Sports Grill & Lanes. For local bowling alleys, this is one of the forgotten places that’s located in the basement of Rhatigan Student of the Wichita State University campus. The hang out area is not just for students, but open to the public and even a great stop for those looking for a bite to eat or a couple of beers before a Wichita State baseball or basketball game.

It’s not just a bowling alley either, there’s pool, darts, Golden Tee, plenty of seating, a full-service restaurant that also serves adult beverages.

Shocker Sports Grill & Lanes is also home to the most accomplished collegiate bowling program in the nation, with a record 23 men’s and women’s national championships.

Back to the reason for our visit… bowling.

We made our reservations in advance. That’s something to make note of because we originally tried to reserve lanes for Friday and they were booked. There’s Cosmic Bowling on Friday and Saturday nights from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., so those are popular nights.

Once we arrived, we took up 2 of the 8 lanes available. They had everything you’d expect at a bowling alley; spare bowling balls, plenty of shoe sizes, and all the amenities to help the little kids bowl, like bumper lanes and the little ramps for the balls. Did I say kids? Because we could have totally used the help as well!

The next two hours were spent bowling, laughing, and just enjoying some family time.

Of course, no family outing is complete without food. We ordered a variety of food like a WuPreme pizza (I love a good pun), wraps, cheese bites, fries, grilled cheese, wings and more.

Everyone’s favorites included the pizza and the wings, but a shout-out to their chips, which were rather addicting.

All in all, a night at Shocker Sports Grill & Lanes was precisely what we needed. Bowling is fun, getting out of the house can be fun, but doing it with family makes it even better. The nice part about our evening was it wasn’t as loud or busy as other bowling alleys. If you’re looking to bowl or even a place to host a kid’s birthday party, this is definitely a place to consider.
