A sneak peek at the new sandwich shop near the arena, Solly & Jude’s

Solly & Jude's

Something to bring life to the area immediately south of Intrust Bank Arena has been long overdue. It’s just a matter of weeks until the new sandwich shop, Solly & Jude’s opens at 400 S. Emporia.

The restaurant has been running some invite-only soft openings to knock out the kinks, get the staff trained and iron out the menu. While they aren’t ready yet to open the doors to the public, I was able to stop by to get a sneak peek at Solly & Jude’s.

For full disclosure, the soft opening was a complete happen chance of me being at the right place at the right time. When I arrived, it was one of the soft openings where all the food was comped for the guests, but diners had to pay for drinks. While my food was comped, I made sure my tip covered the entire price of my meal and drink, plus an additional generous tip. It’s difficult to give a review when you aren’t fully vested into the meal, so I tried to treat this as one.

When I stepped into the restaurant, I was really digging the vibe of Solly & Jude’s. It had a very chill feel to it. A long bar top was the first thing I saw as I stepped inside. An ample number of chairs lined up against the bar top, while more seats were placed along the opposite side of the bar.

A couple more four-tops and a few booths completed the space. It wasn’t a lot of seating, so that’s something to keep in mind. This will likely be a place that fills up quickly on evenings where an event takes place at the arena.

There are plans to add more seating on a patio at Solly & Jude’s once the warmer weather arrives.

I started my evening with an old-fashioned, which was a nice little sipper to get me through the evening. Shoutout to my bartender, Zoe, on this one.

The menu at Solly & Jude’s featured ten sandwiches that all came with a side of chips and a chocolate chip cookie.

After perusing through the menu that had such items as a smoked turkey sandwich, pastrami sandwich, an Italian, BLT, and tuna salad sandwich, I already had my mind made up. I went with the traditional Reuben which included pastrami and corned beef, tangy coleslaw, Russian dressing and Swiss cheese.

Please keep in mind, the sandwich I received may not look like what will be available when they open. They are looking at different bread options, so things could change. Remember, this is a soft opening where they are testing things out.

For what it’s worth, I thoroughly enjoyed my sandwich. While it didn’t have sauerkraut, the addition of a tangy coleslaw was a nice touch and their special take on a Reuben. I’m not the type of person who feels it’s important that meals be made exactly how they have been for years; a little creativity and twist is always welcome.

Another option on Solly & Jude’s menu was Scott’s Tots, which were drizzled with a sauce of your choice. They had truffle oil, honey sriracha, BBQ, bacon, garlic Parmesan, cheesy jalapeño and Russian dressing. The honey sriracha was calling my name and an excellent choice. The tots offered the right amount of crisp and were the perfect compliment to my sandwich.

I sat at the bar for a while and just caught up with people. It was just a good, relaxing time. One thing I said during my visit is Wichita has been yearning for more to do around the arena. And Solly & Jude’s is located in a great spot with plenty of traffic.

While it’s no dive, it certainly has that type of charm. It had that neighborhood type of bar vibe. I’ll be excited to return once they open and just spend a Saturday afternoon hanging out here.

No official date on when Solly & Jude’s will open, but it could very well be before the end of the month.

Here’s the tentative menu they are still working on. Pricing will be added once they open.

Happy Dining,
Eddy

Excited to hear. I keep driving by on my way home and I’ve been wondering about them. My partner will be very excited about those top three sandwiches (corned beef, pastrami, and ruben – their favorites).
