Over the past decade, it’s been Antojitos Salvadoreno, El Pollo Dorado, Restaurant Nicatropical, Jet BBQ, Restaurante Delicias Authentic Mexican Food, Restaurant Playa Del Carmen, and most recently El Papa Pollo. The newest restaurant to take over the spot at 2117 E. Central is Southern Style Cafe.

Southern Style Cafe is a restaurant that specializes in many Southern comfort foods like fish, wings, burgers, hot links and more. At the moment they are only available for carryout.
My lunch consisted of a single catfish, tater tots, and five wings. Compared to some other establishments that offer fried catfish, Southern Style Cafe was fairly quick on getting all the food finished. I was able to get in and out in about 10-15 minutes.
To start things off, I enjoyed the tots. They were crispy and fried just right which is all I ask of tater tots. Next up, my fried catfish was definitely on par with many of the other similar style restaurants in town. There was a light thin breading coated with some seasoning to offer a nice saltiness to it. I won’t say it’s the best catfish I’ve had in town but it was still a very worthwhile meal.
The wings were meaty but there wasn’t much flavor to them. While they were filling for five wings, it could have used some seasoning or dry rub to give it some kick. If there was, I didn’t notice it.
The gentleman working at Southern Style Cafe was charismatic and welcoming. I don’t necessarily think Southern Style Cafe offers much to separate themselves from other restaurants of its kind. It’s all very similar. But if I was in the area looking for food, I’d stop by out of convenience.
